Best food finds at Whole Foods (updated)

We all know shopping at Whole Foods can be very expensive but they do carry some high quality products at decent prices. Hopefully this quick guide can help you score some deals on great products.


Best food finds at Whole Foods:

1. Organic frozen fruits

They are very competitively priced at $2.99 for a bag of organic strawberries and $3.99 for organic wild blueberries. I used them in my protein smoothies (recipe here).

2. Organic bunched kale - $3.49

I grow this curly kale in my garden but in the winter when I don't have my own this is what I go for. You will get at least 4 delicious salads out of one bunch and this kale is great both raw and cooked.

3. Organic Red Readishes - $2.49 per bunch

4. Frozen vegetables - $2.79 for organic broccoli, $1.99 for organic cauliflower

I love these veggies better than Coscto's or Trader Joes' - they are much smaller and perfect for shallow steaming* - they cook more evenly and come out nice and crisp. In case you wonder, studies show that frozen fruits and vegetables are just as nutritious (if not more) than fresh due to the fact that they are picked and flash frozen at their peak readiness.

*Shallow steaming is my favorite method of cooking fresh or frozen vegetables (such as broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus, zucchini) .

According to my research it preserves the nutrients better than any other method of cooking. Plus it doesn't require any fat, so it saves a ton of calories.

How to do it?

1. Fill the bottom of a frying pan with chicken stock (or water with spices). You will only need about an inch of liquid.

2. Turn the over on high, cover the pan, and bring the stock to boil.

3. Add the vegetables, cover and steam for about 5 minutes (from frozen vegetables) or to your liking.

4. Don't take the cover off until you are done cooking them.

It may take you a couple of tries before you figure out the best combo of liquid to vegetables to time, but it's definitely worth it.

5. Sugar and nitrate free bacon - $5.99

Every other bacon I've looked at has added sugar, which is so unnecessary as this bacon tastes awesome.

6. Polska Kielbasa - $5.99

If you are into sausage like I am, this is THE ONLY Polish sausage that tastes like the real deal. This is definitely the least healthy option on this list but if you are going to buy sausage anyway, this is the one to get. It's very high in sodium and fat so watch out for that, but know that a little goes a long way - it's so flavorful! I usually get two dinners (for 2) out of this. Great for soups too.

7. Organic Rotisserie Chicken - $9.99 (new price for Amazon prime members)

This chicken is not cheap by any means however if you use every piece of (I use it 3 ways), you will get your money's worth.

Once you peel the chicken off the bones (1), move the carcass to a pot filled with water (and carrots, onions, celery, etc.) and cook on low heat for 2-3 hours.

You will get a wonderful (2) chicken bone broth (high in protein and collagen, very healing to the gut) that's worth at least $8. And it's going to be so much better than the store bought. Proper bone broth should be gelatinous when cold.

I go even one step further and (3) bled the bones (with water) in my Vitamix and freeze it in ice cube trays. I feed them to my dog as treats in the summer.

8. Theo Chocolate, Organic & Fair Trade - $3.69 per bar

This is a really good deal on such a high quality chocolate. I actually went to tour their factory in Seattle, WA and I can vouch for the quality & sustainability of their products and solid business practices. My favorite bar is the 70% dark chocolate spiced with chili. Little spicy but so yummy!

9. Good Culture Cottage Cheese - $ 5.99 for large container (4 servings) or $1.99 for a single serving container > this product goes on sale a lot so watch out for that.

You may think this is a lot for cottage cheese, however this product is like no other in this food category. First, it's taste is superior. Second, the ingredients list is as clean as it gets. This is the only organic, whole-milk cottage cheese that doesn't have preservatives, powdered milk solids and other sketchy ingredients added to it. Plus 19g of protein per serving and less sodium than other brands.

10. Fage yogurt - 4 for $5

This is my husbands favorite yogurt so I buy these all the time. When you get them on sale, (which I have to say are pretty much all the time), they are a really great deal. Regular price is $1.59 (same as TJ's).

11. LAVVA plant based coconut yogurt - $4.99 for 16 oz (when on sale)

THE BEST plant based yogurt I've tasted. No added sugar, and only 6 g of naturally occurring sugars. It's so delicious I eat it as dessert. It is high in fat and low in protein so use this as a treat rather than main meal.

12. Various MUESLI's - high fiber, no added sugar, whole grain cereals, European style

If I was to pick best cereal, something like this would be it. Whole grain based, no added sugar, healthy fats from nuts & high fiber means. More satiety and better blood sugar response.

13. Bean pastas

Choose from red lentil, mung bean, chickpea and many others. Really great protein source for plant-based eaters, and for all of us in between just a nice high fiber pasta that can be served with sauce and no meat. Serving of this pasta provides anywhere between 15-18g of protein, and about 4-5 g of fiber.

14. Natural CALM (Magnesium Citrate) supplement $18.99

I use 1 tsp of this powder mixed in a glass of water before I go to bed. It helps with sleep, especially getting more deep sleep (Magnesium is a neurotransmitter), muscle cramps and tightness (magnesium is a muscle relaxant) and it helps to go to the bathroom regularly (also relaxes muscles in the GI tracts). I bring this with me to all my trips. Very little goes a long way. It has a nice lemon flavor.

15. WASA Light Rye Crispbread $3.69

I use 2 slices of this crispbread every morning at breakfast with my 2 eggs, guacamole and spinach. 2 slices have 40 calories, 4 g of fiber and only 7 g of net carbs, no added sugar and 2 g of protein. Also the ingredients list has only 2 ingredients. Whole grain rye flour and salt. Also, fat free.

16. Old-fashioned rolled oats $2.99

If you are into overnight oats, make sure you use rolled oats like these, not instant oats.

17. Broccoli sprouts $2.99

Raw broccoli sprouts contain high amounts of a powerful compound called glucosinolates. These compounds and their metabolites—what they become when broken down—may contribute to various aspect of human health and disease prevention, including fighting both cancer and inflammation. I love adding these daily to my lunch, whether it's in a salad, on top of avocado toast, or as a side dish, I highly encourage you to add this to your diet.
