How and why do I use essential oils?

Many people are not familiar at all with the benefits of using essential oils so today I wanted to share some information about them. 

 

In today's article I will be going over: 

 

- what are essential oils;

- how to use essential oils; 

- benefits of essential oils; 

- my favorite oils and how I use them; 

- free classes in essential oil education that I'm hosting; 

 

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are botanical extracts of plants that posses an array of protective chemical compounds.

 

Some say that using essential oils is like tapping into the immune system of plants.

 

Plants produce organic compounds in their leaves and stems in order to protect themselves from viruses, fungi, bacteria, insects and other invaders.

 

When extracted those compounds can provide similar benefits for humans.

 

Essential oils are selectively-toxic immune boosters that go after harmful pathogens - bacterial, viral, fungal and otherwise - while protecting benign ones. 

 

I've used essential oils for years and their healing properties always amaze me. 

 

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS? 

There are hundreds of ways to use essential oils. When I started I mostly used them in laundry, in my DIY facial toner (recipe HERE), in DIY cleaning products, and I diffused them when I was sick. Nowadays, I've been taking them internally and applying topically as well. 

 

It's important to know that every essential oil can be used in at least one of three application ways:

1) topical (directly or mixed with carrier oil), 

2) aromatic (through diffusion),

3) internal (only purest and highest quality oils can be ingested). 

 

Essential oils are very potent so a little drop goes a long way.

 

Before using any oils topically for the first time, dilute it with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil (1 drop of oil for 5 drops of carrier oil) and rub on your skin to see how you react. 

 

Some oils such as cassia, cinnamon, clove, geranium, lemongrass, oregano, thyme are very hot and should always be diluted (1:10 ratio). 

 

Some oils can cause photosensitivity so it's best to stay out of sunlight for at least 12 hours after applying them to your skin. Citrus oils such as  lemon, lime, wild orange and grapefruit belong to this category. 

 

Familiarize yourself with whatever oil you are using in order to avoid any side effects and to get the most benefit of its use. 

 

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING ESSENTIAL OILS? 

 

 Some of the benefits of incorporating essential oils to your life can be: 

- hormone balancing, 

- anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, 

- deep sleep promoting, 

- relaxing and aiding in recovery, 

- alleviating muscle and joint pain, 

- cleaning your home, 

- strenghtening the immune and nervous system, 

- reducing the symptoms of cold/flu, 

- improving digestion, and promoting overall GI health, 

- aiding in weight loss by reducing appetite, 

- adding into various dishes, 

- reducing anxiety, stress and emotional issues, 

- supporting the respiratory system. 

 

 

MY FAVORITE OILS AND HOW I USE THEM

 

 

Lemon 

 

Main benefits: powerful cleanser, offers digestive benefits, uplifting, energizing, anti-bacterial, detoxifier.

 

How I use it: in my toner; I often drink it first thing in the morning to help with liver detox; I often diffuse it in my office to uplift the mood; it's also great in laundry and cleaning products. 

 

 

Tea Tree 

 

Main benefits: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, supports the immune system, protects against seasonal threats, powerful cleaning and disinfecting properties.

 

How I use it: I add it to my laundry to absorb odors, mix it into DIY cleaning products and insect sprays, add it to my facial toner. 

 

Peppermint

 

Main benefits: soothes digestive issues, promotes healthy digestion, helps with breathing, energizes and refreshes.  

 

How I use it: I love to diffuse it with lemon and wild orange oil in my office. I add it to the laundry as well. 

 

 

Lavender 

 

Main benefits: sleep promoting, skin soothing, relaxing. 

 

How I use it: I rub it on my chest and wrists before bed to promote better sleep, or whenever I'm feeling anxious or stressed. 

 

Eucalyptus 

 

Main benefits: supports respiratory system, eases breathing, refreshes, relaxes.

 

How I use it: whenever I feel a cold coming in I add a few drops when I'm taking a hot shower (close your eyes are the hot steam with it will burn your eyes), I also diffuse it at night with Tea Tree Oil if anybody in my house has a cold. 

 

Helichrysum 

 

Main benefits: supports overall cellular health, liver function, and internal cleansing properties, promotes youthful complexion. 

 

How I use it: I mix a drop of it with my face cream and apply before bed. 

 

 

Frankincense 

 

Main benefits: strong anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, helps maintain cellular function, studies have shown it has cancer shrinking properties, soothing and beautifying, renewing, grounding and promoting feelings of wellness. 

 

How I use it: I take it orally 1-2 times a day under the tongue, I also rub it in my scars to promote healing, and rub it in my chest before I go to sleep (mixed with lavender and clary sage). 

 

Oregano

Main benefits: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, supports the immune system and healthy digestion. 

 

How I use it: Whenever I feel even the slightest hint of cold coming on, I take it orally 2-3 times a day mixed with honey or water. This is a very spicy oil and must be diluted or else it will burn your mouth and lips. 

 

Fennel


Main benefits: promotes healthy digestion, metabolism and circulation; supports respiratory system. 

 

How I use it: I rub it in my abdomen whenever I feel gassy, bloated or in pain, and/or when I have menstrual cramps (mixed with clary sage and lavender).
